In the classic film “Casablanca” (1942), Humphrey Bogart consoles his great love Ingrid Bergman with the memory of Paris: “We’ll Always Have Paris.” The short film named after this legendary quote is an example of how dreams do not always come true and places of longing cannot simply be recreated. In the Chinese city of Tianducheng, an entire neighborhood is modeled after the “City of Love” with the Eiffel Tower and Champs-Élysées, but the dream of real estate speculators functions at most as a photo backdrop for newly married couples: Instead of Parisian flair, the eerie atmosphere of a ghost town prevails here.
