Restless is our heart until it finds rest in you. (Augustinus)

In Erich Spitzbart’s devotional room, Roman Catholic images of saints take center stage: kitschy, dusty relics from a distant time when religion had a higher status in people’s lives. Especially in the nineteenth century, it was a widespread custom in peasant households to hang up such pictures as a glimmer of hope in the “vale of tears” of the real social conditions—a piece of heaven on the wall to dream about when going to bed at night after a hard day’s work. These comforting images held the paradisiacal promise “Everything is going to be all right.”
