David Allen Burns & Austin Young / FALLEN FRUIT

an asynchronous repeat pattern created from original photographs, printed with archival watercolor inks onto fabric, variable size
commissioned by: OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH

In the 21st century, we wonder, what is it that makes something beautiful or sublime? And will beauty persist? The artwork invites the viewer to take a few minutes to relax and merge with the installation. The artist duo Fallen Fruit presents flowers, birds, and fruit from the jungles of Mexico in an asynchronous repeat pattern against a kaleidoscope of polychromatic color fields. At first, beauty prevails, but in fact, the artwork calls attention to the abandonment of nature and the tragic losses of natural habitats.

Interrogating the familiar, Fallen Fruit investigates aesthetics; interstitial urban spaces, bodies of knowledge, and new forms of citizenship. Fallen Fruit is an art collaboration originally conceived in 2004 by David Burns, Matias Viegener and Austin Young. Since 2013, David Burns and Austin Young have continued the collaborative work.
